Spice Route's Chakalaka 2016 vintage is a sophisticated, spicy red, aptly named after a spicy South African relish. It is crafted from six grape varieties chosen for their suitability to the Swartland region, and grown largely on bush vines sited on deep iron-rich clay soils. Spice Route's 2015 harvest was farmed without irrigation thanks to a wet winter, which bolstered the water table, followed by warm weather in August which resulted in a relatively earlier bud burst. The summer was warm, dry and windy, which allowed for perfect ripening conditions and high quality grapes with great concentration, which comes through in the glass.
"Characterful, creative, mourvèdre-based 6-way blend from mostly dry-farmed bushvines. Rhône-accented 2016 offers dense, spicy multifaceted fruit, broad shoulders and velvet texture. Named after feisty local spice blend."Platter's Wine Guide
